In private lessons, I focus on building a strong foundation of basic techniques such as time feel, tone, finger technique, reading skills, and aural skills. Once proficiency is shown in these areas the student may begin in studying classical literature and/or jazz improvisation. Heavy emphasis is placed on music theory and critical listening to recordings of all musical styles. I believe a musician should be well rounded and understand the history of their instrument, as well as the music they are playing.
In order to encourage my students to get the greatest possible benefit from their private instruction, I evaluate the progress of each of my students in several key areas at each lesson. The following is a sample of the evaluation form that I use.
