As a saxophone major at Luther College I performed classical literature for a jury of music professors at the end of each semester. In addition I performed a junior recital which included Paul Creston’s “Sonata for Alto Saxophone”, James DeMars’ “The Seventh Healing Song of John Joseph (Blue)” (a piece for alto saxophone and tape), and an original composition for jazz combo entitled “Groove”.
I also played lead alto saxophone in Jazz Band I, and soprano saxophone the Saxophone Quartet. In 1997 I toured Japan for two weeks as a member of the Luther College Concert Band, playing tenor saxophone. In addition to the formal ensembles, I played saxophones, flute, and congas in a working jazz combo by the name of “Chronic Fusion”. I also played flute in the Varsity Band.
While at the University of Northern Iowa I played lead alto saxophone in Jazz Band II and tenor saxophone in a jazz combo. I have also performed with the following jazz bands: Coe College Jazz Ensemble, Eastern Iowa Director Kicks Band, the Bill Carson Big Band, and the Vanguard Jazz Collective.
I was the drummer in the orchestra for
Act I of Benton County
for three years. During this time I was a part of the following musicals: “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”, “Kiss Me Kate”, and “Annie”.
I have also made several appearances with local groups such as: Me and Rosie B,
Electric Mule,
Billy Lee Janey,
Bryce Janey,
the Western Justice swing band, and The Hugh Sheridan Experience.
Currently I am working as a freelance saxophonist and conguero for local blues bands.
