Doubles for Saxophone Players

Introduction

As a saxophone player in jazz band you will be asked to play flute, clarinet, or even piccolo. This is especially true at the collegiate level. These instruments take time to learn so there is no time like now to start thinking ahead.

Flute and Piccolo

The fingerings for flute and piccolo are very similar to the saxophone, so reading will be an easy adjustment. The embouchure however is much different. The flute has much less resistance than the saxophone so one must use your air efficiently to prevent hyperventilation.

Clarinet

The embouchure for the clarinet is similar to the saxophone so it should be a relatively easy switch with the right adjustments. However, the fingerings differ in the lower register which can make reading much more difficult.

The Saxophone Family

Most common double in the saxophone family is the soprano. This instrument is difficult because of its inconsistent intonation. The small mouthpiece requires you to use a smaller and fast moving air stream, more like a clarinet.
